Comparative Pulsation Calculations with Op and Opal Opacities

چکیده
Comparative linear nonadiabatic pulsation calculations are presented using the OPAL and Opacity Project opacities. The two sets of opacities include effects due to intermediate coupling and fine structure as well as new abundances. We used two mass luminosity (M L) relations, one standard (BIT), and one employing substantial convective core overshoot (CO V). The two sets of opacities cannot be differentiated on the basis of the stellar pulsation calculations presented here. The BIT relation can model the beat and bump Cepheids with masses between 4 and 7 M 0' while if the overshoot relation is used, masses between 2 and 6 M 0 are required. In the RR Lyrae regime, we find the inferred masses of globular cluster RRd stars to be little influenced by the choice of OPAL or OP. Finally, the limited modeling we have done is not able to constrain the Cepheid M L relation based upon period ratios observed in the beat and bump stars. Opacity, Metallicity, and Cepheid Period Ratios in the Galaxy Andmagellanic Clouds
Linear pulsation calculations are employed to reproduce the bump Cepheid resonance (P 2/Po = 0.5 at Po ~ 10 days) and to model, individually, the PdPo period ratios for the dozen known Galactic beat Cepheids. Convection is ignored. The results point to a range of metallicity among the Cepheids, perhaps as large as 0.01 ~ Z ~ 0.02, with no evidence for any star exceeding Z = 0.02. We find masses...
متن کاملUp-dated opacities from the Opacity Project
Using the code autostructure, extensive calculations of inner-shell atomic data have been made for the chemical elements He, C, N, O, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe and Ni. The results are used to obtain up-dated opacities from the Opacity Project, OP. A number of other improvements on earlier work have also been included. Rosseland-mean opacities from OP are compared with those from...
متن کاملInstability strips of SPB and β Cephei stars: the effect of the updated OP opacities and of the metal mixture
The discovery of β Cephei stars in low metallicity environments, as well as the difficulty in theoretically explaining the excitation of the pulsation modes observed in some β Cephei and hybrid SPB-β Cephei pulsators, suggest that the “iron opacity bump” provided by stellar models could be underestimated. We analyze the effect of uncertainties in the opacity computations and in the solar metal ...
متن کاملAccuray of Stellar Opacities and the Solar Abundance Problem
The abundances of some of the most common elements in the Sun has been called into question by recent analysis based on new non-LTE hydrodynamic models. The new abundances of C, N, O, Ne etc. are 30-40% lower than the ’standard’ solar abundances, which were heretofore well established and supported by precise helioseismological observations. A number of recent studies have addressed the issue f...
متن کاملA comparison of Rosseland-mean opacities from OP and OPAL
Monochromatic opacities from the Opacity Project (OP) (Seaton et al.) have been augmented by hitherto missing inner-shell contributions (Badnell & Seaton). OP Rosseland-mean opacities, κR, are compared with results from OPAL (Iglesias & Rogers) for the elements H, He, C, O, S and Fe. The OPAL data are obtained from the website www-phys.llnl.gov/Research/OPAL/index.html. Agreement for H is close...
